Ex-Meta SWE | Working on something new in AI

Day 16 after quitting Meta. I did zero work yesterday. Today I woke up more stressed than if I had worked 12 hours. At Meta, not working was easy. Clock out at 5, close the laptop, actually relax. The work would be there tomorrow. Someone else was responsible for the outcome. Now there's no clock to punch. No one telling me when to start or stop. Every hour is a choice. And yesterday I chose wrong. I told myself I'd take a break. Clear my head. Come back fresh. Instead I spent the whole day in this weird limbo. I was too stressed to enjoy the rest, too committed to resting to actually work. I just sat there thinking about everything I wasn't doing. The anxiety builds on itself. You skip a day, feel behind. Feeling behind makes you anxious. Anxiety makes it harder to focus. So you get less done. Which makes you more anxious. Which makes tomorrow even harder. At Meta, I had tons of PTO and never felt guilty using it. Now I have unlimited time and can't take a single day off without spiraling. Nobody warns you about this part. Everyone talks about the freedom of being your own boss. Nobody mentions that freedom means there's no one to give you permission to stop. No manager approving your time off. No PTO balance proving you've earned a break. I'm realizing the hardest part of working for yourself isn't the work. It's learning when to stop without feeling like you're falling behind. Still haven't figured that out yet. To everyone else building something alone: how do you actually take a day off? Genuinely asking. Follow me if you are building a startup and if you're also learning that total freedom comes with its own kind of trap.
