π Call for Submissions: Microbial Physiology and Geomicrobiology Across Volcanic and Geothermal Systems of the Andes and the Pacific Ring of Fire π Extreme heat, low pH, sulfur compounds, heavy metals, reactive gases, the Pacific Ring of Fire and the Andean volcanic arc host some of the most geochemically hostile environments on Earth. And yet, microorganisms donβt just survive there, they thrive, having evolved remarkable metabolic strategies to harness geochemical energy and endure conditions lethal to most life forms. Despite their striking diversity, these volcanic and hydrothermal ecosystems remain significantly underrepresented in the scientific literature, a gap this Research Topic aims to close. We welcome Original Research, Reviews, and Methods papers on hot springs, fumaroles, acidic crater lakes, solfataras, and deep-sea hydrothermal vents, covering themes such as: π Chemolithotrophy, phototrophy, and energy conservation in extreme habitats π Metabolic pathways underlying elemental cycling in volcanic/hydrothermal systems π Physiological and molecular mechanisms of adaptation to geochemical extremes π Genomic, transcriptomic, and metagenomic approaches to microbial and viral metabolic potential π Enzyme discovery and biotechnological applications from extremophile metabolism From high-altitude Andean plateaus to deep-sea vents along the Ring of Fire, we want to bring together researchers advancing our understanding of microbial life at geochemical extremes, with implications for biogeochemistry, evolution, and biotechnology.
