The eight book I designed comprises notes and essays by John C. Welchman. The design incorporates a reference to the label on an old-fashioned notebook, which is maximized by the InDesign option for dots on the edges of the frames, in both positive and negative formats, implemented within strict rules. All of this is done in a dark blue Pantone, reminiscent of ink, yet intense and, again, fully implemented. The CBK Nude paper creates a more introverted style and brings integrity, again embodying the feel of a notebook. Yet, the entire object feels monumental. The legible yet somewhat classic Calvino typeface By Zetafonts was chosen for the body typeface, Thin for elegance. Blacker Mono, also by Zetafonts, was chosen for the header. Monospace naturally evokes a classic typewriter look, which is now as historical as a notebook with a label. Together, it forms a bold, eclectic, post-historical book. The careful use of footnotes also makes it a book with an extremely intellectually grounded quality. The apparent ambiguity of the expressive application of formal elements, incorporating classical foundations and references, makes it a kind of glitchy (contemporary) postmodern (already dated) piece. While glitchy is often brain rot, and postmodernity intertextual, this design aims to evoke and challenge here and now. Moreover, the designer, Freek Lomme, isn’t a true designer, a fact he reinforces with the simplest InDesign intervention possible. This banality can also be a flair, a kind of leveling effect anticipating to classic art historical foundation of the dynamic writing.
