Getting around safely and freely should not be an impossible dream for any Australian. For Christine and her two young sons, Oscar and Easton, car travel had become stressful and unsafe. Both boys are autistic and have ADHD, and even short trips could become overwhelming. Through Freedom Solutions Australia’s (FSA) Safe Ride Project, our staff and technical volunteers worked with Christine to develop two Custom Sensory Covers, tailored to each child’s individual needs and interests. The covers helped Oscar and Easton stay engaged, self-regulate and remain safely restrained and comfortable during car trips. For Christine, the difference has been life-changing. “I can’t tell you how much day-to-day life has changed for us. Now I feel like I’m not alone with the crazy car rides.” These are the kinds of personalised solutions families cannot simply buy from a store. They are made possible through co-design, skilled volunteers, practical innovation and the generosity of supporters who believe people with disability deserve safety, comfort, freedom and choice.
