On November 14, 2025, at #Muzinda zone of #Mpanda commune, #Bujumbura province, water from the #Nyarunzogi River overflowed onto the main Bujumbura–Bubanza #road, forcing vehicles to stop for over an hour as they waited for the water level to decrease. Local residents were deeply concerned as well. According to #Law No. 1/09 of May 25, 2021, which amended the Environmental #Code of the Republic of #Burundi: #Article 4 states that the protection of the Burundian environment is the responsibility of the State, local authorities, public institutions, individual citizens, and organizations #Article 9 requires that all national sectoral economic plans must integrate environmental concerns. #Article 10, paragraph 2, affirms that protecting and improving the environment is a duty to both present and future generations #Article 7, paragraph 2, mandates that competent authorities take all necessary measures to support the harmonious development of all living beings. In light of this, we urgently call for the strong construction of a wide drainage canal for the #Nyarunzogi River, as well as additional #canals along the main road in Muzinda, to prevent similar flooding. If we truly recognize the dignity and right to a healthy environment for the #citizens living near the river and for #travelers along this vital route, then urgent #action must be taken. We therefore call on local and international #organizations, #communities, #individuals, and especially our Burundi #government to come together in this effort to protect lives and preserve human #dignity. Let this message reach near and far. Every action counts. Join the movement to protect #humanity. We call on local and international organizations, collectives, individuals, and especially the #BurundiGovernment to take part. Let’s spread this message far and wide every action counts! #UNEnvironment #HumanRights #Burundigov #SDG13 #SDG11 #YouthVoices #DisasterRiskReduction #Nyarunzogi #ProtectCommunities
