📡 A conservation first in Guyana. After introducing some of FZS's work in Guyana over the last few days, we're excited to share a recent milestone from the Rupununi landscape: the first-ever satellite tagging of Yellow-spotted River Turtles (Podocnemis unifilis) in the Kanuku Mountains. Led by the South Rupununi Conservation Society (SRCS) and supported by FZS and other partners, the initiative combines modern telemetry with generations of local knowledge about the rivers and wildlife of the region. The data collected will help reveal how these turtles move through the Rupununi river system, where they nest, feed, and spend critical stages of their lives. This knowledge will directly support conservation planning and help safeguard freshwater habitats for the future. What makes this milestone special is not only the technology. It is the collaboration behind it - bringing together community researchers, rangers, conservation practitioners, and scientists around a shared goal: protecting one of Guyana's most important freshwater species.
