Our team represented the State of West Bengal in a landmark matter at the Supreme Court of India, with significant bearing on federal financial relations and the operational framework of centrally sponsored welfare schemes. The Court dismissed the Union of India's Special Leave Petition challenging an order of the Calcutta High Court directing the implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 (MGNREGA) scheme in West Bengal, which had been in abeyance in the State since 2022. This judgment opens the door for the State of West Bengal to move forward in agitating for pending dues under MGNREGA of over INR 4,000 crore from the Union of India. Senior Advocates Kapil Sibal, Gopal Sankarnarayan, and Kalyan Bandyopadhyay led the representation before the Supreme Court.
