We are contributing to the development of new European nuclear fuel 🤝🏻⚛️ Fortum and three other European energy companies have signed an agreement with the French company Framatome to develop fully European nuclear fuel for VVER-type nuclear power plants, including Loviisa power plant. The aim of the cooperation is to diversify fuel supply and reduce Europe’s dependence on imported energy. “Security of energy supply is a strategic priority for us at Fortum. Diversifying the entire nuclear fuel value chain strengthens our ability to supply electricity reliably to our customers,” says Petra Lundström, Executive Vice President responsible for Fortum’s nuclear operations. The cooperation with Framatome is Fortum’s second project to diversify fuel procurement for the Loviisa power plant. In November 2022, we signed an agreement with Westinghouse Electric Company on the design, licensing and supply new Western fuel type.
