Coming from years of research on land rights, environmental conflict, and community dynamics across Latin America, he brought a critical and independent perspective to what we are building. What he found reflects the reality of many forest frontiers. Deforestation here is not driven by ignorance, but by a lack of viable alternatives. For many communities, expanding into forest has simply been the only way to sustain livelihoods. But what stood out was the shift that is beginning to take place. During a weekend of community meetings, farmers engaged deeply, asked practical and often tough questions, and ultimately chose to participate. As Nick described it: ā€œš˜žš˜©š˜¦š˜³š˜¦ š˜¢š˜£š˜¢š˜Æš˜„š˜°š˜Æš˜®š˜¦š˜Æš˜µ š˜¢š˜Æš˜„ š˜š˜¢š˜¤š˜¬ š˜°š˜§ š˜¢š˜š˜µš˜¦š˜³š˜Æš˜¢š˜µš˜Ŗš˜·š˜¦š˜“ š˜„š˜³š˜Ŗš˜·š˜¦ š˜„š˜¦š˜§š˜°š˜³š˜¦š˜“š˜µš˜¢š˜µš˜Ŗš˜°š˜Æ, š˜—š˜š˜™š˜ š˜°š˜§š˜§š˜¦š˜³š˜“ š˜¢ š˜¶š˜Æš˜Ŗš˜²š˜¶š˜¦ š˜°š˜±š˜±š˜°š˜³š˜µš˜¶š˜Æš˜Ŗš˜µš˜ŗ š˜µš˜° š˜¤š˜©š˜¢š˜Æš˜Øš˜¦ š˜¦š˜“š˜µš˜¢š˜£š˜š˜Ŗš˜“š˜©š˜¦š˜„ š˜±š˜³š˜¢š˜¤š˜µš˜Ŗš˜¤š˜¦š˜“ š˜¢š˜Æš˜„ š˜³š˜¦š˜·š˜¦š˜³š˜“š˜¦ š˜µš˜©š˜Ŗš˜“ š˜¤š˜°š˜¶š˜³š˜“š˜¦ā€¦ š˜š˜°š˜³ š˜µš˜©š˜¦ š˜§š˜Ŗš˜³š˜“š˜µ š˜µš˜Ŗš˜®š˜¦ š˜Ŗš˜Æ š˜µš˜©š˜¦š˜Ŗš˜³ š˜š˜Ŗš˜·š˜¦š˜“, š˜µš˜©š˜¦š˜“š˜¦ š˜§š˜¢š˜³š˜®š˜¦š˜³š˜“ š˜©š˜¢š˜·š˜¦ š˜µš˜©š˜¦ š˜°š˜±š˜±š˜°š˜³š˜µš˜¶š˜Æš˜Ŗš˜µš˜ŗ š˜µš˜° š˜¦š˜¢š˜³š˜Æ š˜¢š˜Æ š˜Ŗš˜Æš˜¤š˜°š˜®š˜¦ š˜£š˜ŗ š˜±š˜³š˜°š˜µš˜¦š˜¤š˜µš˜Ŗš˜Æš˜Ø š˜µš˜©š˜¦ š˜ˆš˜®š˜¢š˜»š˜°š˜Æ š˜§š˜°š˜³š˜¦š˜“š˜µ š˜Ŗš˜Æš˜“š˜µš˜¦š˜¢š˜„ š˜°š˜§ š˜„š˜¦š˜“š˜µš˜³š˜°š˜ŗš˜Ŗš˜Æš˜Ø š˜Ŗš˜µ.ā€ For us, it reinforces a simple idea: real impact starts with trust and viable options on the ground.
