Coming from years of research on land rights, environmental conflict, and community dynamics across Latin America, he brought a critical and independent perspective to what we are building. What he found reflects the reality of many forest frontiers. Deforestation here is not driven by ignorance, but by a lack of viable alternatives. For many communities, expanding into forest has simply been the only way to sustain livelihoods. But what stood out was the shift that is beginning to take place. During a weekend of community meetings, farmers engaged deeply, asked practical and often tough questions, and ultimately chose to participate. As Nick described it: āšš©š¦š³š¦ š¢š£š¢šÆš„š°šÆš®š¦šÆšµ š¢šÆš„ šš¢š¤š¬ š°š§ š¢ššµš¦š³šÆš¢šµšŖš·š¦š“ š„š³šŖš·š¦ š„š¦š§š°š³š¦š“šµš¢šµšŖš°šÆ, šššš š°š§š§š¦š³š“ š¢ š¶šÆšŖš²š¶š¦ š°š±š±š°š³šµš¶šÆšŖšµšŗ šµš° š¤š©š¢šÆšØš¦ š¦š“šµš¢š£ššŖš“š©š¦š„ š±š³š¢š¤šµšŖš¤š¦š“ š¢šÆš„ š³š¦š·š¦š³š“š¦ šµš©šŖš“ š¤š°š¶š³š“š¦ā¦ šš°š³ šµš©š¦ š§šŖš³š“šµ šµšŖš®š¦ šŖšÆ šµš©š¦šŖš³ ššŖš·š¦š“, šµš©š¦š“š¦ š§š¢š³š®š¦š³š“ š©š¢š·š¦ šµš©š¦ š°š±š±š°š³šµš¶šÆšŖšµšŗ šµš° š¦š¢š³šÆ š¢šÆ šŖšÆš¤š°š®š¦ š£šŗ š±š³š°šµš¦š¤šµšŖšÆšØ šµš©š¦ šš®š¢š»š°šÆ š§š°š³š¦š“šµ šŖšÆš“šµš¦š¢š„ š°š§ š„š¦š“šµš³š°šŗšŖšÆšØ šŖšµ.ā For us, it reinforces a simple idea: real impact starts with trust and viable options on the ground.
