Recently, I have spoken/corresponded with more than two dozen senior professionals around the world in various disciplines but mainly financial crime. Each one came into their current discipline after a couple of decades in a different but related area. Some have had jobs, some have been consultants. Every one, with one exception, says the same: I cannot get a job, I rarely get consultancy, I can't even get reliable training contracts. My experience counts for nothing. Everyone, with the same exception, says : I no longer earn enough to cover the operating costs of my business and my family's living expenses. We are talking about people who have given 20-35 years or more in a range of mission-critical areas of endeavour who are dismissed out of hand. Instead, tens of millions of pounds/dollars and so on are spent in people whose only experience has been working in the carefully cultivated atmosphere of large consultancies whose prime instruction is to sell, upsell and cross-sell and to never recommend any course of action that doesn't feed profit back to the centre. Governments, regulators, financial businesses - time is running out. We are running out. And when we do, you will be left with a department full of people who have passed an exam and spent two years in a remote operations call centre. But no one will notice because regulators are staffed with similar numpties who think experience has no value. #experience
