Opinion: Presidents and executives alike have tried to pull the wool sweater over people's eyes and soften their image with knitwear. And the TV world got the joke. Hence, Logan Roy's succession of shawl-neck cardigans in 'Succession', and his creepy offspring's affection for hilariously misnamed 'quiet luxury' sweaters. The show didn't intend for these people to be admired, but not everyone caught the wink. For those who need it spelled out, the arch cad in 'Zootopia 2', the oligarch Milton Lynxley, wears a cable-knit sleeveless sweater while wickedly scheming. The sweater-as-image-softener trope, then, has been pushed so far that it has inverted completely, writes Robert Armstrong. A sweater is now the mask of a villain. None of this is to suggest that sweaters have stopped being cosy. Sometimes a cardigan is just a cardigan. Go ahead and layer up. Just remember, especially at work, that a soft garment can’t soften your image any more, and it might make you look like a fake. https://ft.trib.al/1X4nM4E
