Michael crossed $1 billion worldwide in July 2026, becoming the first biopic in history to hit that mark and Lionsgate's first billion dollar film. It had already passed Bohemian Rhapsody as the highest grossing music biopic. Antoine Fuqua directed, Graham King produced, and Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson's nephew, plays the lead with no prior acting experience. In this interview King describes the casting process. Jaafar was not handed the role. He was put through camera tests and roughly two years of acting classes and dance training, and King told him not to tell his family what he was doing in case it fell through. Jaafar eventually came to King and said his family had no idea where he was going all day and that after a couple of years he had to tell them.
