Investing in Asia and China is likened to returning to an investor’s playground. From the swing of opportunities to the slide of volatility and see-saw balance of risk and rewards, the region is arguably the world’s most dynamic playground. While sentiment towards the region has recently been subdued, there are signs the carousels are turning favourably. We were pleased to host our clients at Fidelity’s Asia: Next ‘From Overlooked to Overdue: Asia’s Investment Case Builds’ event earlier this week, where our investment experts dissected the underlying trends to uncover actionable insights. Asia Economist Peiqian Liu kicked off the event by delving into the underlying dynamics shaping the investment landscape. From the impact of tariffs and Asian economies’ available ammunition to enact supportive measures, to China’s anti-‘involution’ campaign and policy-easing pivot – from supply-side to consumption-boosting, she challenged clients to look past the noise to recognise the quiet momentum gathering across Asian markets. Next, China AMC Investment Director, Jessie Meng, CFA, in a fireside chat with Client Portfolio Strategist Christopher Wong, CFA, offered domestic onshore perspectives as they delved into China’s evolving economy and capital markets. They discussed the mindset shift of both policy makers and market participants where government policies are supporting institutional liquidity, whether local ‘A’ shares are primed to catch up on the offshore Hong Kong ‘H’ share rally, and the kaleidoscope of new investment possibilities uncovered by China’s transformation. Finally, in a candid debate, Head of Investment Directing, Asia Pacific, Stuart Rumble, and Asia Fixed Income Portfolio Manager, Terrence Pang, scrutinised the drivers behind the rebound in Asian equities and fixed income to assess whether this is grounded in improved fundamentals or driven by fleeting sentiments. The weak US dollar benefiting Asian emerging markets, artificial intelligence catalysts, structural improvements in corporate governance and a turnaround in Asia high yield bonds all underpin their cautious optimism.
