What can fiber optic sensing do for your geotechnical project? ICSMGE, Vienna - Part 1 It was a rare moment and a privilege to moderate Session 2 at the Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS) workshop at ICSMGE, Vienna: ‘Proven value in Geotechnical Infrastructure Projects’ — showed how DFOS, in all its forms and origins, offers solutions that answer difficult monitoring questions. Why rare? Because it was users who told their stories. Five expert presentations covered a range of DFOS monitoring projects, topics, and techniques. 🟨 Tunnelling — Christoph Monsberger opened with enhanced DFOS monitoring capabilities across both construction and operational phases of tunnel projects. 🟨 Tunnels, piles & civil infrastructure — Nicky de Battista demonstrated practical value delivery across three geotechnical challenges. 🟨 Linear assets and slope monitoring — Anna Stork & Jim Whiteley showed how DAS, DTS and DTSS make infrastructure safer and smarter. 🟨 Soil monitoring — R. Andrew Yeskoo, Ph.D., P.E. walked through the practical considerations that ensure each field deployment of DFOS systems delivers reliable data. 🟨 Dike monitoring — Carlo Rabaiotti introduced Fibradike, putting distributed pore pressure and effective stress monitoring within reach. The closing panel discussion, led by Nils Nöther, answered audience questions on DFOS. And with the new development from Fibradike, the story is evolving. Thank you to the eloquent speakers and to the engaged participants! The conversation is evolving.
