The great Polish-American pianist Mieczyslaw Horszowski was born on June 23, 1892 and had one of the longest careers in the history of the performing arts spanning roughly 90 years from his debut as a child prodigy around 1900 until his final public appearances in the early 1990s. His playing was celebrated for its naturalness, tonal beauty, and musical depth rather than sheer virtuosity. Because he had relatively small hands, he avoided some of the most technically extravagant repertoire. “Not one note of the masters can be improved; but the playing of all of them can always be improved.”
