Henry David Thoreau, the American naturalist, philosopher and essayist was born on July 12, 1817 in Concord, Massachusetts. He was a leading figure of the Transcendentalist movement and is best known for advocating simple living, self-reliance, and thoughtful engagement with nature. Thoreau is best known for his 1854 masterpiece, Walden—a reflection on simple, self-reliant living in natural surroundings—and his influential 1849 essay titled Civil Disobedience, which advocates for individual resistance against unjust government policies. Thoreau was an ardent and outspoken abolitionist, serving as a conductor on the underground railroad to help escaped slaves make their way to Canada. He wrote strongly-worded attacks on the Fugitive Slave Law (“Slavery in Massachusetts”). A memorable quotation: “I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”
