Are we running out of fish? The short answer is no, according to Manuel Barange, who leads FAO’s fisheries and aquaculture work. But how we get to the answer is more complex. Fish biomass is estimated to be about 12 times greater than human biomass, and global catches have remained stable since the late 1980s. So, we’re not running out of fish anytime soon, but that doesn’t mean sustainability of fisheries can be taken for granted. In this episode of The Work We Do, Manuel discusses the findings of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2026, the challenges of fisheries management, and aquatic food’s role in nourishing a growing world.
