In central Italy, a small hilltop town named Sermoneta is home to a medieval citrus fruit called trombolotto. A cross between a bitter orange and a citron, trombolotto has a history of being grown in this town since the medieval and early Renaissance era. At the end of the 15th century, residents turned annexes into gardens to avoid additional taxation. Trambolotti grew then, as they do today, spilling over the ancient walls, supporting local families and preserving a unique agricultural heritage. 🍋 Today, a collaboration between trombolotto producer Angela Concu and FAO Champion, Chef Cristina Bowerman, is bringing greater visibility for the beloved fruit. Recognizing connections like these between crops and cultural heritage, farmers and chefs, ingredients and cuisines is what we celebrate on Sustainable Gastronomy Day – June 18.
