✈️ First stop: France. 🇫🇷 Welcome to our Cord Blood Awareness Month journey. Fittingly, the story of cord blood itself began with a journey. In 1988, a cryopreserved cord blood unit travelled from the United States to France—carried on board an airplane by Professor Hal Broxmeyer, occupying a passenger seat on its way to Paris. There, Professor Eliane Gluckman performed the world's first successful umbilical cord blood transplant, giving a young boy with Fanconi anemia a second chance at life. Without the courage of Professor Gluckman, the vision of Professor Broxmeyer, the trust of the Farrow family, and the pioneering work later continued by scientists such as Professor Joanne Kurtzberg, cord blood might have remained little more than a scientific curiosity. Instead, it became a standard of care that has saved thousands of lives around the world. Every journey has a beginning. This one changed the future of medicine. #CordBloodAwarenessMonth #CordBlood #ElianeGluckman #HalBroxmeyer #JoanneKurtzberg #FanconiAnemia #StemCells #Transplantation #FamiCordGroup
