“Learning the Hard Way: How My Respect for IKEA Led to a Disturbing Experience. A lesson in corporate accountability.” When global brands rely on external law firms to protect their IP without effective oversight, the gap between corporate values and on-ground execution can create risks far greater than the infringement itself. As a business professional who admired IKEA; its brand, its culture, and its global success — I never imagined that my respect for the company would evolve into a personal experience that challenged my trust in corporate processes and ethical governance. In January 2025, I raised a formal concern to IKEA’s Ethics & Integrity team, reporting serious misconduct by their external legal representatives in the Middle East. My intention was simple: to ensure that IKEA was aware of how its name and authority were being misused in a way that caused harm rather than protected the brand. The case was handled professionally at first, but the conclusion later issued by IKEA’s Risk & Compliance team left several critical points unaddressed; especially regarding the accuracy of information, due diligence, and accountability for actions taken in IKEA’s name. This is not a story about IP rights. Those must be protected, and I fully respect that. The real issue is one that many global companies overlook: What happens when external legal partners act in a way that exposes the brand to ethical, legal, and human impact risks, and the internal governance process fails to detect or correct it? My experience revealed gaps that, if not addressed, could affect others in similar situations, especially in regions where legal systems are vulnerable to influence or misrepresentation. I will share more in the coming posts, including how the situation escalated, what went wrong, and the lessons for global brands on safeguarding their integrity when operating through external partners. This is a conversation worth having, not just for me, but for every organization that values its reputation, ethics, and people. #CorporateGovernance #BrandReputation #EthicsInBusiness #LegalCompliance #RiskManagement #IKEA #Leadership #Accountability #BusinessIntegrity #HumanRights #Transparency Inter IKEA Group
