LoRaWAN is not Wi-Fi for the production line. A properly designed LoRaWAN deployment does not give sensors direct access to PLCs, SCADA systems or other critical OT assets. But protocol-level security alone is not enough. A secure industrial deployment depends on five layers: ✅ device authentication ✅ AES-128-based encryption ✅ message integrity protection ✅ replay protection ✅ strict network segmentation The last one is decisive. LoRaWAN should operate as a separate telemetry layer, with no direct route to production-control systems. Any required integration should be limited, monitored and preferably read-only. Used this way, LoRaWAN can expand industrial visibility without creating an uncontrolled path into the production network. Applications involving actuation or process control require a separate OT cybersecurity and safety assessment.
