📆🌍 Within the framework of « Our Ocean Conference » held this week in Mombasa (Kenya), focus on a flagship programme on blue economy. 🌊🐟 Under the “Sustainable Western Indian Ocean Programme” (SWIOP), Expertise France implements two projects, which aim to address some of the main challenges encountered within the Western Indian Ocean, including ocean governance, illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, sustainable fisheries management, degradation of marine and coastal exosystems, biodiversity loss, climate change impacts and the need for stronger science, data and regional cooperation. 🔍 The Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region is a global biodiversity hotspot, home to diverse ecosystems such as coral reefs, mangroves, seagrasses, and coastal wetlands. These ecosystems play a major role in the WIO region, by supporting local livelihoods, food security and sustainable blue economy opportunities, while also contributing to coastal protection, carbon storage and climate resilience. 🤝 Funded by the European Union the two projects are implemented in close coordination with other partners such as the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the European Fisheries Control Agency - EFCA, the Commission de l'océan Indien (COI) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH. The first project titled “SWIOP Subcomponent 1.2” covers the three following Specific Objectives: 🎯 Improving the collection, treatment, storage and protection of fisheries data 🎯 Strengthening the production and use of scientific knowledge on species under RFMO’s mandate 🎯 Reinforcing RFMO’s member States’ capacities to comply with RFMO’s Conservation and Management Measures (CMM) The second project titled “SWIOP Pillar 3” covers the three following Specific objectives: 🎯 Improving the management of transboundary areas and areas beyond national jurisdiction 🎯 Upscaling Nature-Based Solutions for ecosystem preservation and restoration 🎯 Improving learning, research, outreach and knowledge of marine and coastal science 🔗https://lnkd.in/eJg8dFwY Iolaine Thibault Elisabeth Chouraki Clémentine Moriceau
