The UK government has published an important update on Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) for the non-domestic private rented sector. The headline: larger private rented buildings over 1,000 sq m in England and Wales are expected to need a minimum EPC B rating from 2031, where cost-effective. The previously proposed EPC C milestone for 2027 will not be taken forward, and smaller buildings below 1,000 sq m are expected to remain subject to the current EPC E minimum standard. This provides some much-needed direction of travel for the market, but not full certainty.
