What happens when a tourism operator electrifies its bus fleet in tropical North Queensland? We're excited to share our new Industry Blueprint for the Deployment of Electric Buses by Private Operators — a knowledge-sharing report developed as part of an Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) co-funded project under the Driving the Nation Program. Working alongside Tropic Wings Cairns Tours & Charters, a Cairns-based tourism operator, we captured the real-world lessons from deploying 12 battery electric buses (and the charging infrastructure to power them). Tropic Wings was Australia's first private operator of an electric bus back in 2019 — and this project builds on that leadership to show how a larger private fleet can make the transition. The goal? To give other private operators across Australia a practical, evidence-based guide to follow as they consider electrifying their own fleets. A few high-level findings: 1. The buses are more efficient than many expect: Even in a climate demanding significant air-conditioning, energy consumption for the larger 53/57-seat coaches generally sat below the commonly assumed benchmark of 100 kWh per 100km. 2. Real-world range is reassuring: Over the first year, buses used only 40-45% of their available driving range per day on average — reflecting a sensible, conservative approach that built confidence over time. 3. Passengers and drivers love them: Riders reported quieter, smoother journeys (with some willing to pay a premium), and experienced drivers were overwhelmingly positive. The transition isn't without its challenges with grid connection and upfront costs remaining as real barriers, but the lessons from this project lay strong foundations for operators ready to embark on the journey.
