Material choices matter! A new product in our stores and online from today that I’m really proud of: the VINDELÄLVEN countertop wash-basin. Made from 100% reutilised ceramic waste material: leftover clay, waste mud material and ceramic scraps from the factory are ground and given a second life. Materials used in IKEA products make up the largest share of the IKEA climate footprint. So it’s clear that the materials we choose play an important role in our transition towards a circular business, and we make conscious choice for every product we design. Sometimes the transition is easier and solutions are ready to scale, sometimes more complex. Unlike most other materials used in the IKEA product range, ceramics are difficult to recycle in conventional systems due to their high firing temperatures, complex compositions and the lack of widespread recycling infrastructure. Sad to admit, too often, ceramic waste ends up in landfill. Strengthening recycling solutions for materials like this is therefore key to reducing waste, conserving resources and making circularity a reality in practice. Reutilising ceramics waste into the new product is one step along the way. Thank you for great work in product development and supply of this beautiful new wash-basin!
