Banning social media for under 16-year-olds is not going to solve the problem, because this is not about age. Across Europe, governments in countries like the United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Cyprus and Ireland have backed proposals for age restrictions on social media use, claiming to protect children in the online world. But this will not address the real problems. Social media is the main way young people access news, participate in political debate, organise campaigns, and build communities. It is also a space where young people from LGBTQIA+ communities, young people with disabilities, and those living in rural areas find support networks. Banning social media would only restrict young people’s connection to public life and their access to political information at precisely the age when democratic habits are being formed. ‼️ Do you really want to protect young people online?
