Researchers from European XFEL, Universität Potsdam and other participating institutions have shown that ultrashort optical laser pulses can trigger extremely rapid lattice vibrations in periodically layered metal structures — not primarily by heating the atomic lattice, but through the pressure exerted by hot electrons.
