Earlier this week, we celebrated the 319 researchers awarded ERC Advanced Grants. Congratulations again to all of them. Behind every funding call, however, are many outstanding researchers whose proposals could not be funded. To all who were unsuccessful this time: thank you for putting your ideas forward. This year, competition was tougher than ever. We received a record 3,329 applications. Dozens of proposals were judged by our panels to meet the ERC's demanding excellence standards, yet the available budget simply could not support them all. Europe is not running short of excellent ideas, but we are running short of resources to fund them.
