There is no democracy without media freedom. As stated by President Metsola, “The European Parliament stands firm in defending free speech, protecting journalists, and acting to uphold media freedom. Because a free press is essential to every democracy”. With the European Media Freedom Act, the EU is strengthening protections for journalists. It ensures transparency of media ownership, and safeguards editorial independence more robustly.
