Today is #WorldOceansDay 🌊 Oceans cover approximately 70% of our planet’s surface, but did you know that they play a pivotal role in sustaining life on Earth by producing roughly half of the oxygen in our atmosphere and absorbing up to a quarter of human-produced carbon dioxide emissions? According to the World Wildlife Fund, the world’s oceans hold over 50 times more carbon than the atmosphere, absorbing 90% of the global warming that has occurred in recent decades as a result of increasing greenhouse gases. Protecting our oceans is thus a vital step towards combatting climate change and safeguarding our environment.  Commercial maritime activities can have profound impacts on aquatic environments and biodiversity; underwater noise arising from engines and sonar systems can disrupt the navigation of and communications between marine mammals, while ballast water discharge can introduce invasive organisms to delicate ecosystems and compromise their resilience.
