Eurofins Maritime Services supports PFOS elimination measures🧯 As of January 1st, 2026, the use of perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) in fixed and portable firefighting systems on marine vessels has been prohibited under regulations set out by the International Maritime Organisation’s Maritime Safety Committee.  PFOS is part of a group of chemicals known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which are highly persistent and resistant to breakdown, resulting in bioaccumulation in the environment. These ‘forever chemicals’ are associated with adverse health outcomes, such as various types of cancer, thyroid and respiratory diseases, and decreased fertility. 🚢 Eurofins Maritime Services offers comprehensive PFOS testing services, providing at-home test kits for seamless sample collection and analysing 31 parameters with a turnaround time of just ten days. The PFAS test package allows stakeholders in the maritime industry to ensure compliance with regulatory standards while safeguarding crews from exposure to hazardous and reducing the environmental impact of their operations.
