Women play a growing role in innovation and intellectual property, yet their full potential is still to be unlocked. In the latest edition of Alicante News, Carolina Arias Burgos (EUIPO) reflects on recent data showing that women currently represent 24% of designers in the EU and still earn on average around 13% less than men in design-related occupations. The article also explores how female talent is often lost along the innovation pathway through the so-called “leaky pipeline”, from education to leadership and participation in IP systems. Closing these gaps is not only a matter of fairness. According to the European Institute for Gender Equality, advancing gender equality would generate significant economic gains across EU Member States. 📩 Alicante News is the EUIPO newsletter covering developments in trade mark and design law, EUIPO practice and case law.
