Creators: do you know how to reserve your rights in the age of Generative AI? Generative AI models rely on text and data mining to train on publicly available content. Under EU law, right holders can reserve their rights if they do not want their works to be used for these purposes. The Copyright Knowledge Centre now explains how this works in practice. Reservation is not just a legal statement. It can be expressed through machine-readable signals that AI systems can automatically detect, whether implemented at website level, embedded in digital files, or managed through dedicated databases. This allows right holders to communicate, in a format machines understand, that their works are not available for AI training, or that a licence is required. In parallel, the General-Purpose AI Code of Practice supports AI providers in identifying and respecting appropriate opt-out mechanisms.
