Outspoken Opposition MP Dessalegn Chane Retires from Politics Following PM Abiy’s Collaboration Offer July 9, 2026 One of Ethiopia's most prominent opposition figures, Dr. Dessalegn Chane, has announced his total retirement from direct political activities immediately after the final parliamentary session of the term, despite receiving an open invitation from Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed to join and work with his administration. Dr. Dessalegn, a former chairman of the National Movement of Amhara (NAMA), had represented Bahir Dar city in the 547-seat House of Peoples' Representatives for the last five years. Known nationally for his sharp, unyielding cross-examinations of government policies during televised parliamentary debates, he described his five-year tenure as  "difficult and challenging" but an immense privilege to serve as a voice for the voiceless.
