Something potentially transformative is happening with the internet. Let me break down some domain data we've collected at Escrow.com. The dot-com domain has dominated for more than 30 years – since the early days of the commercial internet. It's ubiquitous. Every company is expected to own one. But this data suggests that could be changing – in a boon for AI-aligned companies…and a tiny Caribbean nation. Escrow.com – the world leader in high-value domain transactions – today released its latest Domain Investment Index. It's the most comprehensive measure of domain trends and tracks more than US$395M in secondary sales, facilitated through our secure online payment platform. Some key stats from the broader market: Domains with dictionary words average around $143K (7x standard) 'Ultra-premium' 4-letter words average $590K Just look at the record-breaking $70M recently paid for AI.com (remember the Super Bowl ad…and subsequent commentary the owner will soon flip it?) – that tells you how dynamic and potentially incredibly profitable this investment class is. But the spotlight finding is the surge in demand not for .com domains but for .AI ones. .AI domain sales nearly tripled in 2025 ($9.4M → $27.1M in resales). Q4 saw more than $10M traded – that's the first time any alternative extension has done that. Mean prices hit $155K — up 53.5% in one quarter. .AI is generating more transaction volume than all the other alternative extensions COMBINED! It's roughly 10% of the .com trade – yet it's fair to ponder: are we seeing a nascent challenger to dot-com's dominance? Or is this a flash in the pan, reflecting the broader AI buzz? Some companies are banking on the former. AI startups are paying 4–5x premiums for .AI before fundraising. Take Lotus Health AI – which paid $400K for the lotus.ai domain (over much cheaper alternatives), then raised $41M from Kleiner Perkins. This demand we've charted appears to have influenced registration prices. The fee for a new .AI domain is set to rise from $140 to $160. Who wins here? Anguilla for one. The island nation with a population of around 16,000 gets a fee for every .AI domain registered – that now accounts for 47% of the government budget. It's reportedly received $96-million a year! Domains truly are 'Digital Real Estate' and .AI is looking like the street so many want to move to. The .AI piece is what stands out most from this data – keen to know your thoughts.
