Today marks an important milestone for the Energy Security Corporation as we announce our first investment: a $100 million commitment to support the construction of a large-scale battery storage platform across Sydney, Newcastle and the Hunter-Central Coast. Our investment will support four battery projects and deliver approximately 650 MW of new storage capacity. Around 500 MW is expected to be operating by early 2029. The platform includes projects in Newcastle and Homebush in Sydney, along with two more batteries across the region. Together, these projects will help strengthen the electricity system in the state’s highest demand areas. The platform will be delivered by PLUS Grid Storage and is expected to grow to as much as 1 GW of capacity by 2031. This new storage capacity will become increasingly important as coal-fired power stations go offline. This investment is a significant step for the ESC and demonstrates the role targeted capital can play in accelerating the infrastructure needed to support a reliable, affordable and clean energy system for NSW.
