The delivery of the transformers to Coolnabacky illustrates the scale, complexity and long-term planning involved in delivering major transmission projects. Transported from Foynes Port in Limerick in 555‑tonne convoys over two weekends, the two transformers now in place at Coolnabacky Substation, Co. Laois are among the largest loads ever moved by road in Ireland — and the largest installed by ESB Networks to date. This milestone marks major progress for the project. Once operational, the substation will boost electricity capacity across the Midlands and South‑East which will support new housing, growing business demand, and Ireland’s transition to a cleaner energy future. The Laois-Kilkenny Grid Reinforcement Project is one of 29 priority transmission projects brought forward by EirGrid Group and being delivered by ESB Networks under the Price Review 6 (PR6) investment programme. Together, these projects represent over half of planned transmission investment and will play a key role in supporting national policy objectives, including housing delivery, economic growth and climate action. This achievement reflects months of planning and close collaboration between ESB Networks, Powercomm Group, EirGrid Group and multiple partners and local authorities to safely deliver infrastructure at this scale. In this video, Lead Project Manager Mark Giblin and James Cafferty of Powercomm Group share insights into the complexity behind the project and what this milestone means for the region.
