What if instead of arguing about abstract aspects of deep-sea mining someone tried to translate societal concerns into concrete and quantifiable research questions? When I found this 2025 paper by Steven Degraer, Tasnim Patel, Ann Vanreusel, and Ellen Pape I was impressed that someone had already done exactly that — translating the concerns circulating in the DSM debate into 80 operational research questions, developed through 13 round-table meetings with NGOs, industry, government, and scientists. The paper also includes an appendix listing every societal concern raised across those meetings. The result is a document that does three things the DSM conversation badly needs: 1- a structured introduction to the public debate, 2- a potential foundation for common ground between parties who rarely agree even on the boundaries of the issue at hand 3- a concrete basis for future research to move forward resolving key uncertainties. This is research that deserves to receive more attention and I was very happy to have Ellen on the podcast to walk me through it.
