From the lab to the railway tracks: first live FRMCS interoperability tests completed! 🚆 Today, Ericsson and Funkwerk Systems GmbH successfully completed the first interoperability tests of the Funkwerk Onboard Units n101 with our Ericsson FRMCS RAN and Core network infrastructure at the Deutsche Bahn Ore Mountains test field – a key milestone on the journey towards FRMCS (Future Railway Mobile Communication System) based on 5G. Over two days of on-track activity, we combined coverage measurements and live drive tests to finetune the 5G band n101 (1900 MHz) network configuration under real operating conditions. On top of the radio coverage work, we validated device-to-network interoperability between Funkwerk’s FRMCS module MTC18 and Ericsson’s network infrastructure – including UE attachment and handover behavior during live runs. These field tests are exactly what Europe needs to bring FRMCS closer to reality: testing technology in motion, learning fast, and feeding insights into the ecosystem. They also support the objectives of the upcoming MORANE-2 program to validate FRMCS specifications and interoperability. A big thank you to everyone involved! We’re looking forward to the next steps and continued collaboration with all partners as we prepare for the planned MORANE-2 program and help shape the future digital backbone for rail communications across Europe.
