Leadership isn’t tested when everything is going according to plan. It’s tested in the moments when expectations aren’t met, when communication breaks down, or when outcomes fall short of what we envisioned. In those moments, we get a choice. Do we react? Or do we lead? Over the years, I’ve learned that how I show up when things don’t go as expected says far more about my character than any win ever will. I try to ask myself a few grounding questions: 🔹 Am I assuming positive intent? Most people aren’t trying to disappoint—there’s usually context I don’t yet see. 🔹 Am I clear in my communication? Unmet expectations often trace back to expectations that weren’t clearly defined in the first place. 🔹 Am I responding in a way that builds trust or erodes it? Leadership is a long game. Every interaction adds or subtracts from the account. 🔹 Am I modeling the behavior I would want from my team? If I want transparency, accountability, and calm under pressure, it has to start with me. As leaders, our reaction becomes someone else’s story. I want that story to sound like respect, clarity, and partnership—even when the outcome isn’t what I hoped for. Because leadership isn’t just about setting expectations, it’s about how you handle the moments when they’re not met.
