Join NSF ERC EARTH for a presentation featuring Xu Han, Assistant Professor at the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Han’s work bridges building science, computational fluid dynamics, artificial intelligence, and energy systems to advance sustainable cooling technologies. As artificial intelligence workloads continue to expand globally, data centers are emerging as one of the fastest-growing sources of electricity demand and thermal energy consumption. Cooling systems already account for a substantial fraction of data center energy use, creating urgent challenges for energy efficiency, grid reliability, and climate sustainability. In this talk, Dr. Han will discuss emerging approaches for intelligent thermal management of data centers, including: - Model-based optimization of data center cooling system operations - Rapid airflow and thermal analysis using Fast Fluid Dynamics (FFD) - Demand response and frequency regulation using flexible data center operations - Future opportunities for resilient, grid-interactive cooling infrastructure The presentation will explore how combining advanced modeling, controls, and flexible energy operation can enable a new generation of sustainable AI infrastructure.
