In their new article, EPIM's former chair Raphaela Schweiger of the Robert Bosch Stiftung and Colleen Thouez underline how cities play a key role in shaping global governance. Examining three case studies over the past decade, there is a shift seen from cities implementing national policies to actively creating systems that are now shaping global policies on migration, climate and humanitarian response. For example, migration governance issues at the local level move past whether migration is viewed as "good" or "bad" to the on-ground challenges cities face in including large populations of migrants. Therefore, it is important to involve local leadership when deciding national migration policies so that their experiences can influence decision making. For EPIM, this work connects directly to questions we are asking about labour mobility, belonging and what it means to build inclusive communities in an environment that is highly politicised.
