EPIC Counsel Suzanne Bernstein testified on Thursday in support of the New Jersey Kids Code Act, an age-appropriate design code that targets data use and design practices that harm minors online. The bill would require companies to take responsibility for making harmful design choices that we know contribute to compulsive use — like infinite scroll, auto-play, and algorithmic feeds that behaviorally profile users —and start integrating privacy and safety by design. We urge the NJ Senate to pass the bill, which incorporates many provisions from EPIC’s model AADC.
