Charley Adams is a 46-year-old father of four living with a rare variant of multiple sclerosis. There are few treatment options, so Charley went looking for experimental and specialized care beyond his home institution in Baltimore. He's traveled to major health systems in Dallas, Milwaukee, and Georgetown — accumulating over 200 medical visits since his diagnosis. That’s a lot to keep track of. And for Charley, it’s imperative that his clinicians are working from a full picture. Epic’s interoperability keeps his care connected across all those different systems. Because his records, including MRI results, blood work, and past treatments, follow him across institutions, new providers can quickly understand his complete history and make informed decisions about what treatments are safe or appropriate. In his own words, MyChart has allowed him to “be his own navigator” — to research options, communicate with his care team, and pursue treatments he otherwise couldn’t have accessed. Without it, he says, traveling to specialists with his full medical history would have meant “suitcases full of paper records,” which simply wouldn’t be feasible.
