How Engineering Teams Should Navigate the Shift to Agentic QA Most quality engineering teams are already using AI. Far fewer have a clear picture of where the maturity curve leads or how to navigate it without skipping steps that turn out to matter. In a Q&A with Design World, EPAM’s Adam Auerbach walks through the three-level #AgenticAI framework our teams use with clients navigating this shift. Code assist (Level 1): Low-code and no-code tools improve #TestAutomation efficiency and open technical workflows to a broader set of contributors. Augmented agents (Level 2): Agents enhance existing SDLC and PDLC workflows without reinventing them, driving significant productivity gains. Fully agentic #QualityEngineering (Level 3): Traditional test automation tools become unnecessary. Agents handle execution while testers focus on domain knowledge and intent. Why the Sequencing Matters Level 3 is a significant enough departure from conventional testing that organizations jumping directly to it tend to struggle. The earlier levels do more than build efficiency. They build the trust, tooling consistency and process discipline that agentic QA actually requires. The role shift at Level 3 is real as well: the BA and the tester converge around owning domain knowledge and intent, and for many engineering organizations that represents a fundamental change in what the QA function is actually for. Measuring the Transition One pattern worth tracking carefully is adoption before efficiency. The instinct is to reach for ROI metrics as soon as AI tooling is in place, but if teams aren't using the tools consistently there's nothing meaningful to measure yet. EPAM uses a pyramid approach that moves from daily adoption through AI output ratios and efficiency gains before looking at business value. Most teams need about three months to work through the early part of that curve. Where is your team on this progression today, and what's made the biggest difference in moving forward?
