Meeting the giants of the Iberian Highlands 🦬🦅 As part of our partnership with Rewilding Europe, some of the ES team recently travelled to the Iberian Highlands in Spain and saw first-hand how rewilding is helping restore missing species and natural processes across this incredible landscape. 🌿 One of the highlights was learning about the growing role of large herbivores and scavengers in the region’s recovery. In January 2026, nine European bison arrived in the Iberian Highlands for the very first time as part of a pioneering rewilding and ecosystem restoration study led by Rewilding Spain. 🦬 These animals are helping researchers understand how Europe’s largest land mammal can support biodiversity, natural grazing and healthier Mediterranean landscapes. We also saw tauros, which are being used to restore the ecological role once played by Europe’s extinct wild cattle, the aurochs. Through natural grazing, these large herbivores help create more dynamic habitats, boost biodiversity and reduce wildfire risk. And then there are the vultures. The Iberian Highlands are already home to impressive populations of griffon vultures, while black vulture reintroduction efforts continue to grow. In late 2025, Rewilding Spain released another 16 cinereous vultures into the landscape, the largest release since the programme began. 🦅 These species are not just returning wildlife. They are helping restore the natural processes that keep ecosystems healthy and resilient. We love sharing stories through #TackleTheCrisis and especially when we’ve seen them up close and personal! 📍 Iberian Highlands, Spain 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ecK-_Cg9 👥 Fundación Española de Renaturalización - Rewilding Spain #TackleTheCrisis #Rewilding #Biodiversity #SpeciesRecovery #NatureRestoration
