Wild horses are shaping a wilder future in Spain 🌿 🐎 During our recent visit to the Iberian Highlands with Fundación Española de Renaturalización - Rewilding Spain, we learned more about one of the most fascinating parts of the landscape’s recovery: the return of natural grazing through wild and semi-wild horses. Today, thousands of hectares of the Iberian Highlands are being shaped by free-roaming grazers, including Serrano horses, Pottoka horses and Przewalski’s horses. Their grazing helps open up habitats, boost biodiversity and reduce wildfire risk across the landscape. One of the biggest milestones came in late 2025, when Przewalski’s horses were released inside a protected area of the Iberian Highlands for the first time. 🐎 These remarkable animals are the world’s last truly wild horse, and their return marks an important step for rewilding in Spain. Europe and Rewilding Spain have now introduced multiple herds across the landscape, helping restore the ecological role that wild horses once played in European ecosystems for thousands of years. Seeing these animals and landscapes first-hand was a powerful reminder that rewilding is not about recreating the past exactly as it was. It is about restoring natural processes and allowing nature to recover and thrive again. And perhaps most importantly, it shows that positive change is possible. 📍 Iberian Highlands, Spain 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ecK-_Cg9 👥 Rewilding Europe 👥 Fundación Española de Renaturalización - Rewilding Spain #TackleTheCrisis #Rewilding #WildHorses #Biodiversity
