Hydrogen: Should we flare or should we vent? At the booths and during the panel discussions at #WorldHydrogen in Rotterdam over the past two days, I noticed one topic was conspicuously absent: the venting or flaring of hydrogen from electrolyzers. Perhaps understandable, as it’s just a small detail in the bigger picture. Yet, we must acknowledge that hydrogen is a potent indirect greenhouse gas, which means flaring is the preferable option. However, this does add to the cost of an electrolyzer—and we’re already struggling with the high expenses of electrolysis. ENTRA took a closer look at how this plays out for several (planned) Dutch electrolyzers.
