Bringing an industrial approach into the control room of an experimental fusion machine is at the heart of the collaboration between Eni and UK Atomic Energy Authority in Culham. This partnership was created to address a concrete engineering challenge: making future commercial power plants increasingly efficient, robust and economically sustainable. To achieve this, optimizing instrumentation and simplifying systems is essential. During the trip, the teams worked side by side on the MAST Upgrade tokamak, developing new operational expertise to bring back into the company and creating a valuable scientific and human exchange. Fusion can be a true game changer in the path to decarbonisation, making collaboration with centres of excellence, universities and industrial organisations strategic to accelerating progress towards commercial fusion.
