Today, we mark the centenary of the birth of Sir Charles Mackerras by opening applications for the next ENO Mackerras Fellowship – the first to take place under the guidance of our new Music Director Designate, André de Ridder. The Fellowship was created in honour of Sir Charles, who was Music Director here from 1970–77 and played a huge role in shaping ENO’s reputation for musical excellence and bold repertoire choices. His love of Janáček and G&S still runs through our work today. As we celebrate 100 years since his birth, the opening of this new Fellowship reaffirms our commitment to nurturing the next generation of operatic talent – and to carrying forward the spirit of discovery and musicianship that Sir Charles embodied. Since it began, six brilliant conductors have been Mackerras Fellows – Olivia Clarke, Matthew Kofi Waldren, Fergus Macleod, Gergely Madaras, Valentina Peleggi and Toby Purser – many now enjoying major international careers. It’s become one of the most important ways we support emerging talent. Applications are now open. Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/eUyf22vP
